In Hugh Lofting's Dr Doolittle the original pushmi-pullyu was an antelope with a head at each end of the body.
In the Rex Harrison movie (left) the pushmi-pullyu was a double-headed llama.
The latest manifestation of someone pulling themselves in two directions is Stewart Stevenson, the Scottish Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change. Among his interests he lists 'private flying'.
