In answering some readers' questions, the New Yorker's drama critic John Lahr writes:
'I think the public discussion is moving toward a revision of the nature of American individualism and community. I think we’ll start seeing that in years to come. Characters will be dramatized in the context of society instead of focussing on the drama of the self to the exclusion of the social sphere.'
